Frequently
asked questions

#1  Can I ferment in any jar?
Frement AnyJar copy

Absolutely! I you would like to ferment with mason jars or even any twist top jar, you can use the Airtender Lid Punch to make a perfect hole in metal lids. You will need a ‘water lock’ to insert into the hole, so the build up of fermentation gas can escape. This type of accessory can be bought in most stores that sell canning accessories.

The other option is to use traditional clip top jars with our special vacuum lids.By creating a vacuum in the jar, you will kickstart the fermentation process and shorten it by several days. As a bonus, you can reseal the cliptop jars with vacuum after opening. This way, your fermentation will stay fresh for longer.

#2  Which clip top jars are compatible?
Airtender ClipTopJar Compatibility

The Airtender vacuum lids fit the most commonly available size of clip top jars, often referred to as 85 or 90. This means that they are compatible with multiple designs and brands, such as Bormioli Fido, Kilner, IKEA as well as many private label brands.

Because of the large number of brands and jar designs, as well as the nature of glass production, it’s always possible that lids do not fit certain jars. If you are uncertain about the compatibility with your jars, please do a check as described in this guide.

Alternatively, you can select any of the complete sets of jars with lids and Airtender vacuum pump.

#3  Does vacuum storage work for all foods?
Tips For Healhty Fruit Eating

Vacuum storage will extend shelf life for most foods. That doesn’t only apply to dry foods like cookies, nuts, and cereals. Vacuum also works for fresh foods such as fruit salads, fresh strawberries, blueberries and even guacamole.

As a rule of thumb, it will keep food fresh 5x longer when compared to conventional storage. An example: when you buy strawberries, they usually start to lose their quality after about two days. Stored in a vacuum jar (in the fridge!) you will extend freshness to up to 1.5 weeks.

Please note that there are more factors that contribute to food aging and spoilage, including temperature and the condition of the food before vacuuming. Maintain good hygiene and adhere to safe food handling guidelines.

Some foods are not suitable for vacuum storage. For more information, please read our compact food storage guide.
